Tim Ryan returning to coach

One of Dubbo CYMS’s favourite sons, Tim Ryan, has been appointed first grade coach for the
2013 Group XI season. Ryan is a multiple Group XI premiership winner as a player and was
captain-coach of the victorious 2004 Fishies team. Ryan takes over from Joe Williams.

“Dubbo CYMS is a club that has enjoyed much success and I’m privileged to be given the job to
ensure that continues,” said Ryan who will be joined by the majority of the 2012 squad, including
Corey Stanley.

“It’s great to see Corey continue on with the club. He has all the skills and is an exciting player to
watch. The team looks like it will be strong,” Ryan added.

Ryan will be ably assisted on the field by Co-captain Chris Thompson. 'Thommo' is the club’s
2011 premiership prop and 2012 CYMS first grade best and fairest (despite being out for half the
season with a shoulder injury). Ryan has praised Thompson as being a great leader on the field
and Thompson was stoked about the appointment: “There’s a great culture at CYMS and a great
vibe," said Thompson, "It’s an absolute honour. I like the challenge and I’ll lead by example.”

2013 Juniors Coach Wayne Sing brings a wealth of rugby league experience to the club. The
veteran of 63 NRL appearances for Balmain, The Roosters and North Queensland will coach the
juniors. Sing’s boys Billy and Marshall will be crucial to the clubs chances of defending CYMS’s
under 18s premiership of 2012. Both Billy (front row) and Marshall (five-eighth) starred in the
grand final victory despite being only 17 and 16 respectively.

At the conclusion of the 2012 season, Chris McGee and Joel Rapley were awarded for their 10
year service to the Dubbo CYMS club. The pair, who’ve played along side one another since the
under 12s at St Johns, took their rugby league careers to the next level by accepting the role of
reserve grade co-coaches. Despite being only 27, the duo has played in 11 grand finals for the
green and whites, winning seven premierships.

At the executive level, club legend Kevin Walkom has been appointed unopposed for a record
10th strait tenure as club president. In his time at the helm, Walkom has taken the club’s winning
culture to a new level, overseeing four first grade premierships, five reserve grade titles and three
juniors trophies.

At the AGM held recently, Walkom said he was extremely appreciative of the new blood that has
offered their time and expertise to the club, supporting the “many hands make light work”
approach:

“It’s great to see the recently retired players stepping up to assist the Club,” Walkom enthused.
“The likes of Aaron Etcell, Richie Richardson, Ben Williams and John Stoddard are all putting
their hands up to work along side their mates in Mark Ellis and Paul Smith.
“I’m also very thankful that club stalwarts John Cook (treasurer), Pat Yeo and Mick Wilson are
continuing their involvement along with Rebecca Ellis, who has been a tireless worker, and Bev
Winters, who returns to assist the club.

Walkom went on to thank departing coach Joe Williams for his successful stint at the club as
premiership half-back and Bob Weir Medalist in 2011 and captain coach of the 2012 grand
finalists. Williams has accepted a job at Mater Dei Catholic College in Wagga Wagga as their
Aboriginal education worker and says “It’s been an extremely difficult decision to leave town
because my son Rome will be staying with his mum in Dubbo. I have also enjoyed my time at
CYMS but I need to be closer to my mother who has some serious health concerns.” Joe will also
be studying teaching in new year.

Tim Ryan and Kevin Walkom share a special bond given that they first partnered to deliver the
club a premiership in 2004 – Ryan’s first year as captain-coach and Walkom’s first year as
president. Walkom is looking forward to reigniting his winning combination with Ryan.
“Tim is a consummate professional and has a thorough knowledge of the game. He’s been
coached by the best when he played at Penrith and Parramatta and he’s a proven coach with his
success at CYMS. We’re glad to have him back.” Walkom concluded.

CYMS have started training with optional touch football sessions at 8am each Saturday before
Christmas at number 2 and 3 ovals with full training to start in the New Year.
